Shoulder pain is a common transient side-effect of vaccination. However, some individuals can develop prolonged shoulder pain and dysfunction following vaccination. This condition is known as Shoulder Injury Related to Vaccine Administration (SIRVA). Individuals who present with SIRVA report no history of prior shoulder dysfunction, rapid onset of pain (within 48 hours of vaccination), and limited range of motion in the effected shoulder. Common diagnoses related to SIRVA include, but are not limited to, frozen shoulder, adhesive capsulitis, tendinosis, rotator cuff tear, impingement syndrome, and shoulder bursitis. Treatment for this condition often includes one or more corticosteroid injections and can require surgical intervention in some cases.
