What happens when vaccines go wrong?
If you or a loved one are injured by a vaccine or a vaccine has caused the death of a loved one, there is a program set up by Congress to provide compensation for that injury or death. The program is called the Vaccine Injury Compensation Program and asking for compensation is a little like a lawsuit. There are, however, important differences. One difference is how compensation is calculated and the reasons for those calculations. The money you can recover, whether recovered through the VICP or through a typical lawsuit, is called, "damages." Damages refers to the specific types of harm for which you can receive money. In the VICP, victims of a vaccine injury can receive compensation for any wages that were lost because of the injury, any past out-of-pocket medical expenses (which were not reimbursable by insurance or another source), and actual future medical needs (also, which are not reimbursable by another source). For these (typically called "economic" damages) you can show these by receipts, tax returns, etc... There is a defined amount which you lost, spent, or will have to spend, and that can often be calculated with precision. What is the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program?
The United States has the safest, most effective vaccine supply in history, and, in the majority of cases, these vaccines produce no side effects. However, as with any medication, side effects can occur. While most are mild, people do experience more serious side effects and, in those instances, can file a petition for compensation with the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (VICP). The VICP was created in 1986 as a no-fault alternative to the traditional tort system, after lawsuits against vaccine manufacturers and healthcare providers threatened to cause vaccine shortages and reduce vaccination rates. In 1988, the VICP began accepting petitions and, since then, have received over 21,585 petitions. During the 30-year span, 18,533 petitions have been adjudicated, with 7,090 of those found to be compensable, while 11,443 were dismissed, and the total amount paid over the life of the VICP is roughly $4.2 billion. The Vaccine Injury Court in Washington, D.C.
The National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (NVICP) is a no-fault system that was implemented through federal law in 1988. Its aim is to reduce the number of lawsuits filed against vaccine manufacturers in effort to prevent companies from abandoning the vaccine business, as public health officials and Congress worried there would not be enough manufacturers providing crucial vaccines. The program is financed by a tax of 75 cents per dose, which is paid by the vaccine manufacturers. When you look at the data from this federal program, however, the numbers reveal just how rare it is for someone to claim they were hurt after a vaccination. In fact, over the past three decades, when billions of doses of vaccines have been administered to hundreds of millions of Americans , the program has compensated about 6,600 people for the harm they claimed was caused by vaccines, and about 70 percent of those awards have come through settlement in cases where sufficient evidence was lacking to prove the vaccines were at fault. Although, since the program’s inception, the total amount in compensation paid out amounts to $4.15 billion. Why was the Vaccine Injury Compensation Program created?
The National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (NVICP) was established in 1988 to compensate individuals and families of individuals injured by covered. The NVICP was adopted in response to concerns about lawsuits against vaccine makers, some of which resulted in substantial awards. Those awards caused some vaccine manufacturers to cease production, which in turn caused supply problems and a reduction in the vaccination rate. Congress was concerned these reductions would cause a resurgence of vaccine preventable diseases. SIRVA: A term you should know before getting a vaccine administered in the shoulder
One of the most common side effects from vaccines, particularly the seasonal flu vaccine, is a sore shoulder. This soreness can be worrying, but in most cases, there is nothing abnormal about some soreness, swelling, and redness at the injection site. However, you don't just have to suffer through it. If you would like to prevent (or at least minimize) that pain, try the following: • Immediately after the injection, move your arm around. This is something that medical professionals will often suggest. Take that suggestion as medical advice. Keeping it still may be the worst thing you can do. • For the first couple of days take an over-the-counter pain reliever, like ibuprofen. Please only take pain relievers you have experience with and can tolerate. • Place an ice pack on the site, to help reduce any swelling. • Try rotating a warm pack on the injection site.
